Virginia Nail Tech Training: How to Find a School
Virginia licenses nail technicians through DPOR’s Board for Barbers and Cosmetology: a program of at least 150 clock hours at a DPOR-licensed school (or a registered apprenticeship), then two exams given by Prov. Below: how to check a school on DPOR’s own rosters, our Richmond guide, what Virginia lets schools teach online, and where online practice fits before you enroll.
The route, in short
- Complete a Nail Technician program of at least 150 clock hours at a DPOR-licensed school. A registered apprenticeship through Virginia Works is another route; see our Virginia license guide.
- Apply online through Prov with DPOR’s combined exam-and-license application; once your school or the Board approves it, Prov emails you to schedule.
- Pass Prov’s written (theory) and practical exams, both within one year of your first exam date. Once DPOR finds you eligible for the exams, it can issue a one-time, 90-day temporary license (no fee) so you can work under the direct supervision of a licensed nail technician or cosmetologist.

How to Choose a Virginia Nail School
- Is the school on DPOR’s current school roster, and is a nail program listed beside its name? A cosmetology school can hold a nail program too; the roster names each school’s programs.
- Did DPOR approve your nail program under the curriculum that took effect on December 1, 2025? Since then, Virginia’s nail curriculum has included 20 UV/LED gel-nail services in place of nail wraps.
- What does the price cover: registration, kit, books and the two Prov exam fees? Get the full price in writing.
- Which days and hours does the program meet? Around Richmond, some programs run on weekday evenings or alternate Sundays and others on weekday daytimes.
- How much of the theory is taught online? DPOR’s rosters have a separate “Nail Hybrid Program” category, so you can check how a school’s program is listed.
- What’s your students’ pass rate on the Prov exams? Ask for the latest figures in writing.
- Can I sit in on a class before I enroll?
Start with DPOR’s own tools: the Board for Barbers and Cosmetology page links its current school rosters (nail technician schools and cosmetology schools, each with its programs), and the DPOR License Lookup lets you look up a school’s license record yourself.
Can You Do Nail Tech School Online in Virginia?
Only the theory, and only through a Virginia-licensed school. Under Virginia's rules, a licensed school with the Board's approval can teach the theory part online; practical training must be in a classroom. Not every school offers it, so ask, and check with DPOR before you rely on it, because rules change.
DPOR's school rosters list these under a separate “Nail Hybrid Program” category. In the Richmond area, for example, Kalina Nail School in Midlothian holds a hybrid program on the roster and describes its 150 hours as 70 theory and 80 practical, with online training included in tuition.

Exams in Virginia
Prov gives both of Virginia’s nail exams for DPOR: the NIC Nail Technology written (theory) exam and a hands-on practical. Virginia sets no order for them, but both must be passed within one year of your first exam date; pass one and you won’t retake it, as long as you pass the other within that year.
Since January 17, 2026, the theory exam can also be taken remotely from home; the practical is in person at a Prov site. The written exam costs $99 and the practical $95, the same for a retake, with no waiting period between attempts. Results are emailed about 24 hours after each exam.
The theory exam includes 10 questions on Virginia law, in English only, and practical exams are given only in English. The nail practical includes a water manicure with polish, a full-well tip, a sculptured nail and its removal, with timed steps. The gel-nail services added to Virginia’s nail curriculum on December 1, 2025 are part of school training; they aren’t among the practical exam’s listed services.

How long does it take to become a nail tech in Virginia?
Virginia sets a minimum of 150 clock hours of training, and each school schedules them its own way. In the Richmond area, CC's Beauty Institute says its program can be completed in three months, while ATiR Academy lists 5 to 8 months. After school, you pass Prov's written and practical exams, both within one year of your first exam date.
Do I need a license to do nails in Virginia?
Yes. Virginia law says no one may offer or perform nail care for pay without a license from the Board for Barbers and Cosmetology, part of DPOR. The license is called Nail Technician, and a licensed cosmetologist may also do nail work. A license expires two years from the end of the month it was issued; the renewal fee is $120, plus any technology fee DPOR charges.
How much is nail tech school in Virginia?
It depends on the school. In our Richmond guide, published prices run from ATiR Academy's $3,000 tuition to Naturally Yours Barber & Beauty Salon & School's $5,700 tuition, as published on September 30, 2026; the guide shows what each one includes. The Prov exam fees, $99 written and $95 practical, are separate; ask whether a school's price includes any of them, and get the full price in writing.
How much do nail techs make around Richmond, Virginia?
BLS publishes pay by metro area. In the Richmond, VA metro, the median for manicurists and pedicurists was $17.60 an hour, about $36,610 a year, in May 2025. That covers employees only, not self-employed or booth-rental techs, and it shows what people already in the job earn, not what any school's graduates, ours included, can expect.
Can you become a nail tech online in Virginia?
Not fully. A DPOR-licensed school with the Board's approval can teach the theory online, but the practical training is in a classroom, and the practical exam is in person.
