To do nails for pay in New York you need a nail specialty license from the Department of State — 250 training hours in an approved course, plus a written and practical exam. Here’s every step, the real cost, and the official board.
New York’s 250 hours must come from a New York State–approved course run by a licensed school — and if any of it is delivered online, it has to be a Department of State–approved distance program with an in-person proctored final exam in New York. A fully-online course that isn’t NY-approved — including ours — does not count toward New York’s 250 hours and does not make you eligible for the state exam. New York licenses nail work as the “Nail Specialty” license — issued by the Department of State.
In New York, nail work is a state license — the Nail Specialty license, issued under the state’s Appearance Enhancement law. Once you complete an approved 250-hour course and pass both exams, the New York State Department of State, Division of Licensing Services issues your license — which legally allows you to perform manicuring and pedicuring for pay. You apply through NY Business Express.

Complete 250 hours
Finish a 250-hour nail specialty course at a New York State–approved school. Any online portion must be a DOS-approved distance program with an in-person proctored final exam in New York.
Check eligibility
You must be at least 17 years old and provide a health certification from a physician, physician assistant, or nurse practitioner.
Apply to the state
Submit your application to the NY Department of State through NY Business Express, with your school documentation and fees.
Pass both exams
Sit and pass the New York State written exam and the practical (hands-on) exam.
Get licensed & renew
Once approved you’re licensed to work. The nail specialty license runs four years; New York requires no continuing education to renew.

Can you get a New York nail license online?
No — New York only counts hours from a state-approved course, with an in-person proctored exam.
This is the single most important thing to understand before you spend money on any course. New York requires your 250 hours to come from a Department of State–approved program run by a New York–licensed school; even approved online delivery requires an in-person proctored final exam held in New York. A fully-online course that isn’t NY-approved cannot count toward the 250 hours or make you eligible for the state exam. Any website that tells you otherwise is not being straight with you.
So where does an online program like ours fit? It builds the craft — real technique, product knowledge, sanitation, and a professional diploma — which is valuable whether you’re preparing for a New York program, building skills for another path, or working somewhere with different rules. It is not a New York State–approved course and does not replace the state’s 250 hours, and we won’t pretend it does.
Proof you did the training
A completion diploma (like the Sublime Professional Diploma) shows you learned the skills and theory of professional nail work. It’s a genuine professional credential — built online, at your own pace — but it is not a New York State–approved course and is not, by itself, permission to work legally in New York.

A New York nail specialty license is issued only by the Department of State, after you complete an approved 250-hour course and pass the written and practical exams. It’s what legally allows you to charge clients in New York. No unapproved online course can issue it in place of the state.

Time: with 250 required hours, full-time students often finish in a few months; part-time students take longer. There’s also a trainee route (a short trainee course plus supervised work) for those starting on the job. Cost: your training program is usually the largest expense; the state application and exam fees are modest. If you hold a current nail credential from another state, New York can consider licensing you based on training and experience equivalent to its own requirements.
