California Nail Technician License Requirements
To do nails for pay in California you need a manicurist license from the state board — 400 training hours at a Board-approved school and a written exam. Here’s every step, the real cost, and the official board.
California’s 400 training hours must be completed in person at a California Board-approved school (or an approved apprenticeship) — hands-on clock hours, not a fully-online course. A fully-online course — including ours — does not by itself satisfy California’s manicurist licensing requirement. Our program builds real skills and a professional diploma; your California license still comes from the state, through a Board-approved school. California licenses nail work as the “Manicurist” license — issued by the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology.
In California, nail work is a full state license — officially the Manicurist license. Once you complete the required hours and pass the exam, the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology (BBC), part of the Department of Consumer Affairs, issues your license — which legally allows you to perform manicuring and pedicuring for pay. Applications are handled online through the state’s BreEZe system.

Five steps from training to licensed manicurist.
Complete 400 hours
Finish 400 clock hours of manicuring training at a California Board-approved school. Hands-on hours are in person; only limited theory may be delivered by distance education at an approved school.
Check eligibility
You must be at least 17 years old and have completed the 10th grade (or equivalent).
Apply to the BBC
Submit your manicurist application through the state’s BreEZe system with your school documentation and the application fee (about $110).
Pass the written exam
Sit the state written exam. California eliminated the practical exam for all license types in 2022, so there is no hands-on state test.
Get licensed & renew
Once approved you’re licensed to work. Renew every two years (about $50). California requires no continuing education to renew.

Can you get a California nail license online?
Not fully — California’s 400 hours have to be earned in person at a Board-approved school.
This is the single most important thing to understand before you spend money on any course. California requires the 400 manicurist hours to be completed hands-on at a California Board-approved school (or a board-approved apprenticeship). A fully-online course cannot, by itself, satisfy that requirement or lead directly to your California license. Any website that tells you otherwise is not being straight with you.
So where does an online program like ours fit? It builds the craft — real technique, product knowledge, sanitation, and a professional diploma — which is valuable whether you’re preparing for a California program, building skills for another path, or working somewhere with different rules. It is not a substitute for California’s in-person hours, and we won’t pretend it is.
Proof you did the training
A completion diploma (like the Sublime Professional Diploma) shows you learned the skills and theory of professional nail work. It’s a genuine professional credential — built online, at your own pace — but it is not, by itself, permission to work legally in California.
Legal permission to work
A California manicurist license is issued only by the BBC, after you complete 400 in-person hours at a Board-approved school and pass the state written exam. It’s what legally allows you to charge clients in California. No online course can issue it in place of the board.

How long it takes and what it costs in California
Time: with 400 required hours, full-time students often finish in a few months; part-time students take longer. After training you apply to the BBC and sit the written exam. Cost: your training program is usually the largest expense; the state fees are comparatively modest. We don’t make income promises — what you earn depends on your market, hours, and specialties.

Moving to California
Transferring an out-of-state license
California doesn’t offer simple license transfer — you generally apply and meet California’s requirements.
Unlike some states, California does not have broad reciprocity agreements. If you hold a nail credential from another state, you typically apply to the BBC and document training and work experience that’s equivalent to California’s requirements, then pass the California written exam. Because the details change, confirm the current out-of-state path directly with the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology before you move.
